Freistadt
The town of Freistadt is in High-Austria, with several kilometers of the Czech border and counts some 7400 inhabitants.
History
Founded in 1220, Freistadt is on the shopping street which connects the Bohemia to Austria. While benefitting from several privileges (all the tradesmen must pay to have the right to cross the city) and from its strategic position, the city makes fortune quickly. To protect the city against hostile incursions, an impressive fortification is built, which exists still today. After the War Thirty Year old, Bohemia belongs to the kingdom of Habsbourg and consequently Freistadt loses its significance like frontier town.
Culture
The Musée of the city has some 18 thousand parts of exposure which are in connection with the history of the city. The visitors find a large collection of paintings there annealed glass, of ceramics as well as tools of craftsmen. Moreover the museum organizes exposures of painters regularly, photographers.
In Freistadt one finds the last commune of brewery within Europe, in which all the owners of the old city have a participation.
