Freestyle (winter sport)

The freestyle is a discipline of slips on Neige, regarded as a extreme Sport, which consists in carrying out figures starting from structures in snow or metal. It can be practiced using any equipment of slips but most usually used are the Ski and the Snowboard.

The freestyle is practiced in special zones, the Snowpark S, or of except track (one speaks then about backcountry ).

The person practitioner the freestyle is called freestylor or more generally ridor .

Description

The freestyle consists in carrying out jumps, in Ski or Snowboard (or any other material of slips), starting from various structures in snow or metal called modules , then to achieve in the air of the figures, said tricks , before to replate , i.e. to fall down correctly and continue the descent.

The sought-after goal is multiple: performance, esthetism of the jump, feelings during the flight, spectacle.

The freestyle backcountry indicates a practice of the discipline apart from the marked tracks. It is a question of practicing freestyle in Except track, in virgin spaces.

History

The freestyle is a discipline emerging gradually of three phenomena:
  • the ski of bumps appeared in the Eighties, consisting in descending a track full with bumps marked out by two springboards on which the candidates must carry out lifting figures
  • the practice of the Skateboard and Roller which includes freestyle and the appearance of Skatepark S as of the Seventies
  • the appearance of the " news glisses" such as the Snowboard and its explosion in the Nineties, which attracts a population of young people
With beginning of the year 90, the ski of bumps is sclerosed: the system of counting of points grants only little importance to the jump compared to the time of descent, the size of the springboards is fixed. The skiers of bumps must compose with a list of figures which does not evolve/move any more. In parallel, the phenomenon of news slip, in particular the snowboard, emerging by imitation with the skateboard and the roller, tends to a practice less academic and codified slips, which excludes the idea from competition. These three phenomena make emerge the need for new spaces of practice of the jumps. The first Snowpark S make their appearance, with Half-pipe S in which the snowboarders reproduce certain figures of the skateboard.

Initially practiced almost exclusively by the snowboarders, the skiers join the movement freestyle starting from the middle of the Nineties, and develop their own figures, released from the rules of the ski of bumps. Vertical and horizontal rotations quickly make shade with the simple jumps variation of the skiers of bumps.

Equipment

The basic equipment is composed of the material of slips (ski, snowboard or other). Today, there exists for each material a range especially conceived for this kind of news slip (freestyle, but also Freeride).

Advised for the Alpine skiing, the port of the Casque appears essential for the practice of freestyle. It makes it possible to mitigate the effect of the shocks to the head, frequent at the time of the missed receptions.

The falls being able to be violent, the wearing of sunglasses is to be proscribed, because glasses could break and involve serious lesions with the eyes. It is rather advised to carry a mask. This last being also an accessory of esthetic use which takes part in the image of the ridor.

Lastly, for the practice of the bars of slide in particular, the port of a reinforced dorsal protection is advised.
