Freestone

The term stone of size indicates the blocks of stones of which all the faces are drawn up , i.e. cut to obtain more or less perfect plans. The joints of the Parement (visible face of the block) are then rectilinear, the apparatus (arrangement of the Maçonnerie) is polygonal.

The height of sitted (of the same stone row height) will distinguish:

  • the “large apparatus” (more than 35 cm in height)
  • the “average apparatus” (between 35 and 20 cm)
  • the “small apparatus” (less than 20 cm)

The stone of size must be:

  • resilient: a stone exposed too a long time to the bad weather on all its faces, or charged on its edges, loses its impact resistance;
  • frost-resistant: a porous or microcracked stone is frost susceptible.

Generally extracted in specific career S, stone of size, or sandstone of construction, was one of principal materials used for the embellishment of the Cathédrale S.

One often finds there in the real information, the abbreviation " PdT" pous to mean Freestone building.
