Freedesktop.org

Freedesktop.org is an abstract zone of collaboration between various projects of Free software like GNOME, KDE, Enlightenment, GStreamer, Xgl/AIGLX or X.Org to work with the interworking of the graphic environments under the systems using X Window System like GNU/Linux (or on others UNIX) by producing software and specifications.

Both principal current environments of office are GNOME and KDE, but the goal of Freedesktop is to be neutral and to propose specifications (almost high with the row of standards) in order to facilitate the work of developers by improving the compatibility of the programs GNOME and KDE, but also to make the experiment of the end users most pleasant possible.

Let us note that Freedesktop does not aim to standardize the user interfaces, which must on the contrary have each one their originalities to like the public different ones, but to harmonize the infrastructure: to copy/stick, shortened keyboards, detection of the material, etc Freedesktop encourages unified protocols and distinct symbols (see Protocol-symbol).

The projects developed under the aegis of freedesktop.org are numerous, one finds in particular:

  • XOrg Foundation Open Source Public Implementation off X11 (X.Org) : official implementation of X11. It is about a Fork of XFree86 does little time before the change of license (i.e. XFree86 4.4RC2).
  • XServer : a new implementation of a waiter X produced by Keith Packard and not based on XFree86. Intended to replace the waiter of the XFree86 project in the long term within the X.Org project, its integration starts starting from version 6.8 of the XOrg project.
