Free license of documentation GNU

The free license of documentation GNU (of the English GNU Free Documentation License ), shortened in GFDL , is a license concerning Royalty produced by the Free Software Foundation. It has as an aim of protection the diffusion of Contenu free and can be used by each one in order to determine the mode of diffusion of its work.

Characteristics

The object of this license is to make very manual, delivers or another document written “free” within the meaning of the freedom of use, namely: to ensure each one effective freedom to copy it or to redistribute it, with or without modifications, commercially or not.

This license is founded on the same principle of Copyleft as the public License general GNU (LPG) used by a great number of free software. In fact it was in particular conceived to cover documentation accompanying them.

The GFDL, like the LPG, authorizes each one to redistribute a work which it protects provided that is done under its same terms. The GFDL envisages possibilities of restrictions of the freedom of modification of covered work. For this reason, works under GFDL all are not regarded as free, in particular by the members of the project Debian (name of most important the completely free Distribution Linux).

Incompatibility between GNU LPG and GFDL

Free License GNU of documentation (GFDL) is incompatible in the two directions with public License general GNU (GNU LPG), which means that documents distributed under a license GFDL cannot be inserted in a computer program placed under a license GNU LPG, and that programs distributed under a license GNU LPG cannot be inserted in documents distributed under a license GFDL. To overcome this incompatibility, certain extracts of computer programs are distributed under a double license GNU LPG and GFDL, so that they can appear in documentation.
