Free field

The publisher Free field was created in Paris in 1969 by Gerard Lebovici to publish works which reflect part of the currents of critical left and Extreme-left not-Leninist of the time.

History

Assisted by Gerard Guégan, who is the first literary director, Lebovici is surrounded by a team which includes/understands in particular Alain Saux and Raphaël Sorin like his wife Floriana Valentine. Free field publishes in this after-68 a large range of various texts which reflect the ideological research of the time as well as an opening towards the American Contre-culture.

In 1971, Free field republishes the book of Guy Debord, the company of the spectacle , and publishes works which are sometimes at counter-current, like those of old the Situationniste Rene Viénet or delivers it of the sinologist Simon Leys (of his true name Pierre Ryckmans), the new clothes of the president Mao , who contributes still to deflate the myth of the Cultural revolution Chinese very long-lived in France at that time especially among the intellectuals.

In 1974, Lebovici congédie the first team of Free field, showing it to want to transform the company into a commercial publisher like the others. The catalog will be purified and Overflow, named to advise leading, will acquire an importance growing in the choice of publications of certain titles (Clausewitz, Baltasar Gracian, Jorge Manrique, poets of Th' ang, Omar Khayyam but also Jaime Semprun, Jean-Louis Moinet and well of others). The marketing policy of the house will break with all the usual uses of the medium of the edition: no publications in paperbacks of the most sold titles, any contact with the press. Free field also republishes some revolutionary great classics as well as adverse writers of Stalinism (Karl Marx, Bakounine, Gustav Landauer, Karl Korsch, Ante Ciliga, Boris Souvarine, Valentinov, George Orwell).

After the assassination of Gerard Lebovici in 1984, the continuators renamed Free field Éditions Gerard Lebovici . Its funds has had for summer taken again by the editions Ivrea.

Bibliography on Free field

  • Editions Free field correspondence 1 and 2 (editions free field - 1981/Ivrea editions - 1996): " Editions are not only defined by the authors whom they accept or whom they push back, but still by the way in which they accept them and the repoussent"

  • Gilles de Bure the golden age of the illustration (editions of the collector - 1997): the chapter " skin of the livre" (p 168-175) reconsiders the graphic work of the first team, and in particular the role of Saux. Many reproductions of covers.
  • Christophe Bourseiller General History of the Far left (Denoël - 2003): the beginning of the chapter " how to manage the heritage? " (p 387-410) milked Free field, until the launching of Ivrea (and rupture with Overflow). This book having been the subject of many criticisms relating to the factual and/or theoretical errors that it would comprise, its contents is to be considered with precaution.
