Free License

A free license is a license applying to a work (of unspecified nature) to make of it a Contenu free offering to the user some Droit S as for the use, to the modification, the repeat broadcast and the re-use of work in derived works. A free license applies four types of freedom for the user of a work:

  • the possibility of using work, for all the uses;
  • the possibility of studying work;
  • the possibility of redistributing copies of work;
  • the possibility of modifying the work of the spirit and of publishing these modifications.

One in general distinguishes the “licenses from free software” of the “free licenses of contents”, which historically were the first to propose these rights.

By extension, one speaks about “license of free diffusion” (or LLD) for the licenses allowing the copy at least. The free licenses are licenses of free diffusion, but the reciprocal one is not true. For example, the Free license Art and the license Creative Commons by-its are free licenses, while the licenses Creative Commons by-nc-its and Creative Commons by-Nd are not free licenses but are licenses of free diffusion.
