Frederick Traugott Pursh

Frederick Traugott Pursh (1774 - July 11th 1820) is a Botaniste germano - American.

It was born with Grossenhain in the Saxony and is formed in the Botanical garden of the town of Dresden. He emigrates with the the United States in 1799. To leave 1805, it works for Benjamin Smith Barton (1766-1815) on a new flora of North America, starting from the plants verified by the Expédition of Lewis and Clark.

The project of flora of Barton is not carried out, but Pursh, which settles with London, carries out a major contribution to the botany of this continent by publishing in 1813 its Flora americae septentrionalis . It returns to America and settles with the Canada in 1816. Its hopes to carry out a philosopher's stone are blocked by its precarious health which had with the Alcoolisme and he dies in poverty with Montreal.

Its memory is preserved by the name of several plants of which the Purshia (Bitterbush) and in several S like Rhamnus purshiana .
