Frederic Kuhlmann

Charles Frederic Kuhlmann , chemist and Alsatian industrialist, was born with Colmar the May 22nd 1803, died the January 27th 1881 with Lille. He is the son of Georges Chrétien Kuhlmann, geometrician-geographer.

He made his studies with Nancy then with the university of Strasbourg. Nicolas Vauquelin, his Parisian Master, sent it to Lille to teach there the Chimie in a municipal course. With the university of Lille, it becomes titular of a pulpit of chemistry and comes into contact with the industrialists of North.

As of 1829, it had the idea to create a sulphuric factory of Acid, then used to fade textile fibers. It was one of the first to produce the sulphuric acid by the process contact (1833) and to use Catalyseur S in the industrial Chimie, in particular in the nitric manufacture of Acid starting from Ammoniac in the presence of Platine.

Quickly, its factory becomes extensive and is also directed towards the production of Engrais and of dye S. With his/her son, they were among the founders of the industry group Pechiney-Ugine-Kuhlmann .
