Frederic Josias of Saxony-Cobourg-Saalfeld
Prince Frederick Josias of Saxony-Cobourg-Saalfeld (December 26th 1737, Cobourg - February 26th 1815, Cobourg), general with the service of the Austria.
Biography
At the service of the Austria since the War Seven Year old, Frederic Josias of Saxony-Cobourg is put at the head of the Austrian army in the first coalition intended to invade the France in 1792.He gains initially several victories: he obtained an advantage with the battles of Aldenhoven, gained in 1793 the Bataille of Neerwinden on Charles François Dumouriez, and obliged it to evacuate the Belgium.
But it was beaten by Jean Victor Marie Moreau with Tourcoing, by Jean-Baptiste Jourdan with Wattignies, Fleurus (1794), and was seen constrained to leave the command. It was withdrawn in its principality of Aldenhoven, and died there forgotten in 1815.
For a long time, the name of Cobourg was associated with that of William Pitt in national hatred in France. Its name associated with Pitt, became under the Terreur the symbol of the coalition of the Europe against the Révolution.
