Frederic Jansoone

Frederic Janssoone (1838 - 1916) was born on November 9th 1838 with Ghyvelde, in the north of France, very close to the Belgian border, in a very religious hearth.

Origins, studies and entry in religion

At the 10 years age, it loses his father.

In 1852 it begins its Humanities (secondary studies) with the college of Hazebrouck while his/her Pierre brother begins his philosophy with the Great Seminar of Cambrai.

In 1856, he becomes clerk-traveller in the textile with Estaires having to stop its studies to help his/her mother. The latter dies whereas it did not have which 23 years, It decides however to finish its studies.

It enters in June 1864 at Franciscains Observing that it known by the Third-Order and will be ordered priest on August 17th 1870. He exerts various ministries then: military chaplain (a few months), under-Master of the beginners at Branday, higher than Bordeaux, house which it had founded with two other fellow-members in 1871.

Little time after, it settles out of Holy Land where it occupies the post of Custodial Vicar of 1878 with 1888.

In 1881 - 1882, Frederic Janssoone makes a stay with the Canada, invited by the Provencher abbot, priest of Cape-Red close to Quebec, but its intervention did not rain so much with the bishop, Mgr Taschereau. It is thus rather with Three-Rivers, that it decided, with the assistance of the abbot Luc Désilets, to establish, in 1888, the Holy Land Police station.

Its life in Quebec

June 13rd 1888, it settles in Quebec, in the parish of Notre-Dame of the Cape, with Three-Rivers, where it worked, until the arrival of Oblats of Marie Immaculée in 1902, and where it died, of one cancer to the stomach on August 4th 1916. Its actions are numerous:

  • Preachings

    • in the Cape-of-the-Madeleine,
    • with the sanctuary of Repair with Point-with-Tremble in Montreal,
    • at Franciscaines Missionnaires of Marie to Quebec and in all the province.
  • Articles for Annals of the Very Holy Rosary and the eucharistic Review, mariale and antonienne that it had founded in 1892 and of many popular reviews of piety.
  • Books of construction like life of Our-Lord and the Life of Saint François .
  • Management, direction and financing of the Holy Land Police station.
  • Support and direct involvement in the development of the pilgrimages for the sanctuary of Our-Lady-of-Cape.

the Frederic Father represents well this spirituality of the catholic rebirth of the middle of the XIXe century based on the brotherhoods, preaching aiming at conversion and fidelity to the obligations of the religion. ” - Hermann Giguère , professor associated with Faculty with theology and religious sciences with the Laval University and general superior with the Seminar with Quebec.

Its originality will remain to have given until the end the testimony of the primacy of supernatural and of spiritual ardently defended and announced to thousands of people in a popular speech and with means which joined them and nourished them ”. (id)

Its life for all this period, and all the end of its life is thus strongly related to the community of the Basilique Notre-Dame of the Cape.

A decisive miracle

the wonder of the eyes

June 22nd, 1888, around 7 p.m., 3 men entered to request in the small church lately dedicated to the Virgin of the Rosary to the sanctuary of Notre-Dame of the Cape, the priest Désilets, the Frederic father and Mr. Pierre Lacroix. While they requested it occurred an event which the Frederic Father itself told: " the statue of the Virgin, who has the entirely lowered eyes, had the largely open eyes; the glance of the Virgin was fixed; she looked in front of her, right to her height. The illusion was difficult: its face was in full light in consequence of the sun which shone through a window and lit all the sanctuary perfectly. Its eyes black, were well formed and in full harmony with the unit of the face. The glance of the Virgin was that of an alive person; it had an expression of severity, fray of sadness. This wonder lasted roughly from five to ten minutes. "

Celebrates

August 4th. To Canada, the celebration is deferred by it to August 5th.

You sent a saint to us; a saint and a monk of an extraordinary power. One disputes it literally. The patients seek it and follow it everywhere. It is a man of God. The more one sees this man of near, the more it is venerated and it is admired. If you see its superiors, you can ensure them that he lives like a saint. It is necessary to live with this extraordinary man to see what there is in him virtue, of intelligence, heart and nobility. ” (Luc Désilets - Priest, 1881)
