Frederic Creswell

Frederic Creswell (1866 - 1948) was a Politician of South Africa, Socialiste, directing South-African Workers party and Ministre for defense of 1924 at March 1933.

In 1923, after the repression of the working revolt of the Witwatersrand by the government of Jan Smuts, it approaches Tielman Roos, the leader of the national Parti in the Transvaal. The workers party that Creswell directs concluded then a pact from government with the National Party for the general elections of 1924 which they gain against the South-African Parti of Smuts.

Creswell enters gouvernment then of James Barry Hertzog.

In 1929, the National Party obtains the absolute majority but Creswell is maintained with the government in spite of the attacks of the right wing of the National Party which asks him to abjure the Socialisme and the Communisme.

Creswell will return in the opposition after the bringing together between Smuts and Hertzog in 1933.

A warship will bear its name " SAS Frederic Creswell" before being renamed " SAS Adam Kock" in 1997.
