Frederic Cailliaud
Frederic Cailliaud is a Explorateur, born with Nantes on June 7th, 1787, deceased on May 1st, 1869 in the same city.
Presentation
Wire of a metal worker-mechanic, it was attracted very young person by the natural science, in particular mineralogy and geology. It was also interested in the Conchyliologie.It took part in two Egyptian forwardings: the first of 1815 with 1818 and the second of 1819 with 1822.
It was named official mineralogist of Méhémet Ali in 1816 and for this reason, the old mines of emerald S of the Pharaons with Zabarah close to the Red Sea finds.
In 1822, it went up the valley of the the Nile until the sixth cataract with Ismaïl, wire of Méhémet Ali and the candidate of navy Pierre-Constant Letorzec. Later it succeeds in penetrating in Ethiopia, hitherto very closed with Europeans and discovered the ruins of Méroé, old capital of the country, and its pyramids.
It brought back a collection of almost thousand parts of its Egyptian voyages.
It was made knight of the Légion of honor in 1824 by Charles {{X}}.
Of return in France, it is turned towards the Natural history and in particular on the Mollusques (the Taret) which perforate the hulls out of wooden of the ships.
It was preserving Muséum of natural history of Nantes of 1836 with 1869 after having been conservative-assistant during nine years.
To its death, it bequeathed part of its collection to the archaeological museum Dobrée of Nantes.
