Fred Frith

Fred Frith (February 17th 1949 -) is a Musicien and Compositeur English. Above all guitarist, it also plays of the low , the Violon, the keyboards and the Xylophone.

He is the cofounder of the groups Henry Cow (1968-1978) and Art Bears.

At the end of the Years 1970, it goes to New York where it collaborates mainly with artists of the musical scene avant-gardist whose Eugene Chadbourne, John Zorn, Zeena Parkins, Ikue Mori, Tom Cora and where it founds the groups Massacre with Bill Laswell and Fred Maher then Skeleton Crew with Tom Cora and Dave Newhouse then Zeena Parkins. It also takes part in the group Naked City. It also directed the groups Keep The Dog and Fred Frith Guitar Quartet.

After the first album of Henry Cow, Frith left in 1974 Guitar Solos, its first album solo, outline of its experiments to the guitar. The album is composed of eight tracks of impromptu and not accompanied music, played using prepared guitars. It was recorded in four days in Kaleidophon Studios with London without any Overdub.

Since the Years 1980, it writes for parts of dance, theater and films.

In 1980, it contributes first once to MATERIAL (with Michael Beinhorn and Bill Laswell, and also Martin Bisi, Fred Maher, Robert Quine) and to Massacre (with Fred Maher, and Bill Laswell) of which the album " Killing Time" leaves in 1980. Its influence as a musician becomes dominating in New York.

In 1982, Fred Frith collaborates in the piece Time Out of the album One Down of MATERIAL, product and carried out by Michael Beinhorn and Bill Laswell. The latter make collaborate in other pieces of the album of the great names such Nile Rodgers, Nona Hendryx, Whitney Houston. Fred Frith brings a his guitar to the piece Time Out very new into 1982 which will have an important influence on many musicians of the Eighties. The album One Down , engraved and pressed out of vinyl 33T and distributed by Vogue in 1982, is quasi untraceable to date.

Since 1999, it teaches the composition and the improvisation with the Millets College with Oakland in California.
