Franz von Mercy

Franz von Mercy (born with Longwy towards 1590 and dead the August 3rd 1645 with Alerheim) was an officer with the service of the Catholic Ligue during the Guerre Thirty Year old.

Mercy is resulting from a family of the nobility of Lorraine. His/her father is also called François. He has a brother, Kaspar (Gaspard), general officer with the service of the duke of Bavaria. His wife is called Anne-Marguerite. She is the girl of the baillif de Ortenau, Johann Rainer von Schauenburg.

In 1606 it enters to the service of the army of the Holy roman Empire and goes up there gradually in the hierarchy. It takes part in 1631 in the Bataille of Breitenfeld and fights in 1634 in the south-west of Germany. It defends Breisach against an attack conducted by the Protestant troops of Bernard of Saxony-Weimar. Then in 1638 it passes to the service of the Bavaria. During the winter 1640 - 1641 it is opposed victoriously to an attack of Swedish ordered by Johan Banér.

The November 24th 1643, the joined together armies of Mercy, Jean de Werth and Charles IV of Lorraine beat French ordered by Josias Rantzau with the Bataille of Tuttlingen.

In 1644, the united armies of Bavaria and Holy roman Empire, respectively under the orders of Mercy and Jean de Werth release Freiburg-in-Brisgau of the occupation by the French and finally, beat the French Army of Condé and Turenne with the Bataille of Lorettoberg. The May 5th 1645 Mercy still on the occasion to overcome French with the Bataille of Hernsthausen. But the August 3rd, Mercy and Jean de Werth, on the other hand, are beaten by Condé and Turenne with the Bataille of Alerheim. This day, Mercy receives a ball of mousquet in full head and fact part of some the 8.000 dead ones. Buried close to the battle field, one engraves on his tomb this epitaph: Sta, viator, heroem calcas .
