Franz Leopold Neumann , born with Katowice (Polish Silesia) on May 23rd, 1900, died with Viège (Were worth, Switzerland) on September 2nd, 1954, is a lawyer, philosopher and theorist of the right and company, State and of the policy, critical thinker of the École of Frankfurt.

Biography

Very committed for the Weimar Republic, defending as a lawyer the trade unions with Berlin, it is constrained with the exile by the Nazis in 1933, it takes refuge initially with London where it writes under the direction of Harold Laski (London School off Economics) his second thesis ( The Governance off the Rule off Law , 1936) before gaining the offices of the Research institute in social sciences of Frankfurt with New York where it will write the book which made it famous until today and whose first edition goes back to 1942: Béhémoth - Structure and practical of national-socialisme . As a specialist except par of the Germany it will be recruited by the Office off Strategic Services (OSI) for which it will work of 1942 to 1945, preparing in particular certain aspects of the Procès of Nuremberg; from 1945 to 1947 it will direct the German Research department there (German Research Section). It will have made recruit with the OSI Otto Kirchheimer and Herbert Marcuse. Within the framework of the OSI, it will turn over to Germany (in particular with Nuremberg), in 1945 for the first time since 1933.

In 1948 he became professor invited (Visiting Professor) to the Columbia University where he will be named ordinary professor into 1950 of public Droit (Full Professor off Public Law and Government) in 1950. It is for this reason that it directed the thesis of Raul Hilberg on the destruction of the Jews of Europe".

In this period, it takes part in the foundation of the free Université of Berlin (Freie Universität) and is at the origin of the revival of the Political science in the Federal Republic of Germany.

He thought of returning to settle in Germany when an car accident cost him the life in Were worth Swiss in 1954.
