Franz Ittenbach

Franz Ittenbach (° Königswinter, April 18th, 1813 - † Düsseldorf, December 1st, 1879) is a German religious painter.

Biography

At the 19 years age, he is pupil with the Académie of the Art schools of Düsseldorf where he receives private lessons of his president, Wilhelm von Schadow.

He is member of the Mouvement nazaréen and joins three friends pupils, Karl and Andreas Müller, and Ernst Deger, and all the four traverse Germany, student and painting together.

He is extremely monk and refuses with insistence any commission on the mythological or pagan subjects. In general, it exclusively devotes its time to the decoration of churches, its work being preceded by religious practices, in particular the confession and the communion.

Of 1839 with 1842, Ittenbach lives in Italy. Of return in Germany, it settles in Munich for some time. In 1849, it returns to Düsseldorf. Of 1859 until its death, he is member of the club of artist " Malkasten".

Works

Its more excellent paintings are with Bonn, in the church of Remi saint and with Breslau in a church devoted to the same saint. There is also remarkable a Holy Family gone back to 1861, painted for Jean II of Liechtenstein in its private vault close to Vienna.

The majority of its other works are in Catholic churches of Germany. Its only important fresco was painted in 1844 in the church Apollinaire saint with Remagen. It also painted some portraits.
