Biography
Formation of the group
Robert Hardy leaves the Yorkshire and settles with Glasgow in 2000 in order to study in Glasgow School off Article In the beginning it does not hope to become musician, even if the choice of the university is partly inspired to him by has musicians of the city, particularly Belle and Sebastian. Alex Kapranos, ex-singer of The Karelia, of which it makes knowledge with the 13th Note Coffee , persuades it to learn the low one and to form a group. Together they recruit the other members of what will become Franz Ferdinand, initially Nicholas McCarthy, at which take place their first repetitions. This one holds the role of beater initially, although the keyboards are its instrument of predilection, until they meet the only Scot of the group, Paul Thomson, old beater of Yummy Fur.Franz Ferdinand starts to repeat in an unused warehouse of the district of Gorbals, located on southern bank of the Clyde river, which they call ironically the Castle (in French in the text). After some repairs the place becomes ideal to repeat and give concerts. The Castle is the framework many anecdotes, in particular some problems with the police force which shows them to have opened an illegal bar, but this forever given up place and is still used for their repetitions. End 2002 the group goes to London with an aim of finding a recording company and after being themselves put in connection with Laurence Bell, president of Domino Recording Company , sign its first contract with this independent label whose catalog also includes/understands Pavement, The Pastels, Clinic, etc
The first successes
After the exit of EP Darts off Pleasure fine 2003 Franz Ferdinand appears as a cover for NME, the first album éponyme is launched shortly after in February 2004, its exit is followed rounds in Europe, with the the United States, in Oceania, and with the Japan. During the year they occur in many festivals of which and, like with the Eurockéennes. Franz Ferdinand reaches the third place of the best sales of albums in the United Kingdom, thereafter all the simple resulting ones from the album are classified in Signal 20. In June the group off interprets Take Me Out on the plate of Top the Pops. Success is longer to take shape in the United States, where the disc is distributed by Epic, subsidiary of Sony BMG, but Franz Ferdinand makes finally her entry in the classification of the sales of albums of the magazine Billboard during 2004; its sales exceed the million specimens. The reception of the press is generally positive and the group obtains a Mercury Prize in September 2004.With the beginning of the year 2005 Franz Ferdinand meets the producer of Hip hop Kanye West at the time of MTV Europe Music Awards, this one declares that FF belonged to the groups that he judges interesting, in particular for their sound of battery, that he describes by the term. On its side the group recognizes the influence of the work of production of Kanye West. Franz Ferdinand appears again as a cover for magazine NME and takes part in the drafting of the number in question. During summer 2005 they occur with the Paléo Festival of Nyon and with the Festival of the Old Plow before setting out again in world tour. The pieces of the second album are played in public during the concerts preceding its exit, it is finally carried out in October 2005. You Could Have It So Much Better enters directly in the first place of the classification of the best sales of albums on the British market and appears in Signal 10 in the United States. Individual the Do You Want To , used as credits of end in the adaptation in Animates Manga Paradise KIS, is interpreted by the group at the time of its passage in the emissions Top off the Pops and Saturday Night Live.
Influences
Like Bloc Party and other young groups of the years 2000, Franz Ferdinand draws her roots of the music of the Talking Heads, Gang off Furnace or Wire. It also seems that the group knew to learn the lessons from oldest: By taking some the best without falling into the caricature and by creating a new kind almost. Scenic play of the Who (see on scene the jumps of Alex Kapranos), combined with the talent of writing, the relaxation and the class of the Beatles (as shows it songs like " Eleanor could your boots on" or " Jacqueline"), with rhythmic powerful with the Kinks (with the image of powerful the " The Dark off the Matinée" , " This Fire" …) could characterize some attitudes and sonorities of the group. For as much the group truly found a style fresh and dynamics which is clean for him.
Members of Franz Ferdinand show also very curious about cultures foreign (in particular Soviet and French about which the leaders Kapranos and MacCarty speak the language easily), and are marked by a very strong artistic sensitivity. Thus, all the discs of Franz Ferdinand are illustrated by small pockets with the geometrical reasons inspired for the Bauhaus and constructivism. The same style was transposed by the realizer Jonas Odell in the video of individual the Take Me Out , which gained a MTV Breakthrough Video Award.
