Franz Courtens

Franz or Frans Courtens (of its true name Franciscus Eduardus Maria Courtens ) is a Belgian painter born with Termonde on February 4th, 1854 and deceased with Saint-Jose-ten-Noode on January 2nd, 1943.

Very young registered voter with the Academy of the Art schools de Termonde it had as professors the painters landscape designers Jacques Rosseels (1828 - 1912), Isidore Meyers (1836 - 1916) and Frans Vinck (1827 - 1903).

He settles with Brussels in 1874 where he attends the free academy of the Patte of Turkey . Its meeting with Hippolyte Boulenger and the École of Tervueren in the open air brings it to the practice of painting.

Its work (landscapes of the surroundings of Brussels, of Campine, Bruges, Holland) is quickly enormously success. Its works are mainly drawings and paintings of landscapes, animals and navy. It will be very famous for its luminous pallet playing with the atmospheric changes.

He will be professor with the NHISKA (Institute of higher learning of the Academy of the Art schools of Antwerp) starting from 1903 and member of the royal Académie of Belgium in 1904. Its contemporaries and the critic art regard it as the spearhead of the Impressionnisme and call it the Rubens of painting landscape designer . He will be leader of the School of Termonde, but will declare large admiror of the School of Tervueren and the École of Fontainebleau.

As from 1907 and on invitation of the royal family, it paints regularly in the park of Laeken.

It will be annobli by the king Albert {{Ier}} in 1922 and will carry the title of baron.

In 1907 the town of Termonde baptized one of its arteries of the name of Franz Courtens (the Franz Courtensstraat ). Its native house is in this street.

He was the father of the painter Hermann Courtens (1884 - 1956) and of the sculptor Alfred Courtens (1889 - 1967). In 1950, Alfred Courtens carried out a statue with the effigy of his/her father. This statue is located in the Franz Courtensstraat of Termonde and was inaugurated by the Queen Elizabeth.

The common of Schaerbeek and Evere also baptized one their communal roadway systems of the name of Frans Courtens : Which occurred Frans Courtens on the territory of Schaerbeek and Street Frans Courtens on the territory of Evere.

Among its disciples, let us raise the name of Firmin Verhevick.
