The Airport Franz Josef Strauß of Munich (Code AITA: million u.a. ; Code ICAO: EDDM ) is located 28 km at the North of Munich.
In 2006 more than 30.7 million passengers passed there, making of Munich the 2nd airport Germany and 7th of Europe. In 2006, for the second consecutive year, the airport of Munich fur named better airport of Europe (" Best Airport in Europe") and 3rd on a world level (after the International airport of Singapore and the International airport of Hong-Kong) by Skytrax.
History
The construction of the airport was finished in 1992, replacing the old international airport of Munich-Riem. When its construction began in 1980 a village called Franzheim had to be demolished and its 500 inhabitants were rehoused elsewhere.The airport was baptized Franz Josef Strauß, which played a big role in the German policy. Amongst other things Strauß was long-term a Prime Minister in Bavaria. Under its government, the creation project of the airport was born. It is said that Strauß, all being a pilot of private aircraft itself, had an private interest for industry and the aeronautical infrastructure. To name the airport according to its name and first names is completely rare, more especially as the operator of the airport is only called “Flughafen München Gesellschaf”. In the area of Munich, the majority of the people prefer the term “Flughafen München” (airport of Munich), sometimes “Flughafen München II” or simply million u.a. The company directing the airport names it Flughafen Mr. München”.
Terminal 2 was completed in June 2003. This terminal is mainly used by the members of the Star Alliance. The Lufthansa increases there also to a significant degree its offers towards international destinations. Indeed the Aéroport of Frankfurt at present reaching its capacity certain destinations with large frequencies are distributed between Frankfurt and Munich.
Because of the fast increase in the traffic, a third track is in construction project. It would also significantly reduce the heavy delays of the winter, which occur sometimes during heavy snowfalls. As often, a strong opposition is born in the populations neighborhood against this project. In fact, lawsuits against the track even were already announced.
