Franklin Thomas

Franklin said " Frank" Thomas is a draftsman and stimulating American, born the September 5th 1912 with Fresno in California and deceased the September 8th 2004 with Flintridge in California. He was member of the legendary team of the " Nine Old Men " studios Disney.

Biography

Franklin Thomas obtained a diploma with the Université Stanford and studied then with the Chouinard Art Institute. Then he was engaged at Disney the September 24th 1934 under number 224. He animated tens of short films and feature-length films.

For the short films one can note work on the brave man small tailor (1938) in which he worked on the scenes with Mickey Mouse and the king; for Pointer (1939), scenes with Mickey and the bear; as well as the scenes with German dialogs for Education for Death (a propaganda film during the Second world war). It animated this last film right before its incorporation in the Air Force. It animated after its return of the sequences of the medium-length films with Winnie and Porcinet.

For the feature-length films, he worked on

  • the scene of tears of the dwarves close to the body of White-Snow (1937)
  • the song of Pinocchio in the puppet theater (1940)
  • the scene of Bambi and Panpan in snow (1941)
  • Lady Tremaine, the mother-in-law of Cendrillon (1950)
  • the Queen of Heart in Alice with the Countries of the Wonders (1951)
  • the Captain Hook in Peter Pan (1953)
  • the scene where the Beautiful one and the Tramp eats spaghettis (1955)
  • the three fairies of Sleeping Beauty (1959)
  • the scene where Merlin and Arthur are transformed into squirrels in Merlin the enchanter (1963)
  • King Louie of the the Book of the Jungle (1967)

Among preceding works, it is recognized to have directed the animation of some of most famous malicious of Disney.

It belonged to the years 1950 to 1970 of the group Firehouse Five Plus Two in which it played of the Piano. It taken its retirement of Disney the January 31st 1978.

With Ollie Johnston, a large friend, it off wrote an explanatory book on animation entitled The Illusion Life , published for the first time at Abbeville Close in 1981. This book is regarded as the bible of the organizers for traditional animation with the hand and mainly for the animation of the characters of Disney style. This book was republished with many recoveries.

Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston twice arose all two their retirements for feature-length films by-products by Disney, they gave to their voices (english language version only) to their caricatures in

  • the iron Giant (1999) in the shape of two railway mechanics
  • Indestructibles (2004) two old Sirs declaring " That' S old school… " " Yeah, No school like the old school."

The two friends were put at the honor in documentary biographical of 1995 Frank and Ollie , directed by Theodore Thomas, wire of Frank, presented to the International festival of film of Toronto. this documentary propose their professional paths, private life and their friendship.
