Frank Costello
Frank Costello (born Francesco Castiglia in 1891 with Lauropoli (Calabria), Italy - 1973 with New York) was a gangster American. It is called “Prime Minister” because of his propensity to privilege the Diplomatie compared to violence, and thanks to its contacts within the legal institutions.
Youths
Castello immigrated in 1895 with his/her mother and her sister; they settled in the Italian ghetto of East Harlem. Into 13 years, it integrated a local gang, which decreed its anglicized name to him. At 20 years, he was imprisoned for eleven months for prohibited wearing of weapon. He joined Lucky Luciano then, in the bootlegging (alcohol traffic), the plays and the machines with under.
The man of the public relations of the Maffia
Quickly, Frank Costello acquired (following the example Arnold Rothstein of which it was a " disciple") a solid reputation of advising forming a bond between the underworld and the authorities (police officers, judges and politicians, in particular those of Tammany Hall, the organization of the Democratic party to New York). Man of the useful contacts, it was thus one of the most influential personalities of the American organized crime and became member of the Commission (large council of the Maffia American), after the war of Castellamarese in 1931 (settling of score between the two more powerful families of New York, of which Lucky Luciano was the large winner).
Machines with under
Frank Costello was particularly active in the installation of a modern invention, the " gangsters manchots" (Machines with under). When the new mayor of New York, Fiorello LaGuardia, launched in 1934 a crusade against them, making them destroy by the police force, Costello passed a market with the governor of Louisiana, Huey Pierce Long (a populist personality discussed and assassinated in 1935). It thus invests the establishment of this State with its machines.
A reign thrives
When Lucky Luciano was imprisoned in Dannemora in 1936, Costello became the acting boss (executive godfather) of his family (approximately 500 soldiers). Its reign is regarded as the most peaceful period and most prosperous for the Maffia New Yorkean. The various rackets of the family extended until Los Angeles (with Siegel) and in Florida (with Lansky) and its company of bookmaking (bets), managed by Frank Erikson, covered all the national territory. Costello extended the activities of the family to the casinos of Cuba and Las Vegas and invests in the real estate with Wall Street. To consolidate its capacity, it could hope on the alliance of Willie Moretti, caïd of the New Jersey, and, after the assassination of this last in 1951, on that of Albert Anastasia, chief of future the Famille Gambino the same year.
The target of the Kefauver commission
In the years 1950, Costello was the target of several legal actions which weakened its position. In 1950 and 1951, the senatorial commission carried out by Estes Kefauver inquired into the role of the organized crime to the the United States, and Costello was brought to appear with many recoveries. Placed under fires of the projectors of televisions, it became the most famous gangster of its time. Faithful to the Omerta (law of silence of the Maffia) and calling upon with this intention Ve amendment of the American Constitution, it was considered to be guilty of insult in front of the Senate in 1953 and spent 14 month in prison. In 1954 and 1956, it was condemned for tax avoidance but managed to make cancel its sorrows.
Ambition of Genovese
Meanwhile, Vito Genovese, underboss (second in command) of the family, ardently wished to replace Costello. To avoid a sentence for murder, it had been exiled in Italy between 1937 and 1946 and on its return, it noted with sourness that the capacity of Costello, as its alliance with powerful the Albert Anastasia had increased during its absence. The power struggle being unfavourable with Genovese, it waited the favorable moment, rather than to start a war of gangs. In April 1957, a killer with the pay of Genovese, Vincent Gigante, tried to assassinate Costello in a New Yorkean street. The legend wants that Gigante would have, while pointing its weapon, alerted Costello while shouting: " Frank, it is for you! ". This one was left there with a wound to cranium.
After this attack, Costello decided to be withdrawn and left its place to Genovese. He was avenged later while taking part with Luciano in the transaction for héroîne trapped which sent the new boss in prison. Costello finishes its days with the hotel Waldorf Astoria with New York, where Carlo Gambino, godfather of the one of the five families, came to visit him. He died of an heart attack in 1973.
