Frank Calder
Frank Calder (November 17th 1877 - February 4th 1943) was the first President of the LNH (1917 - 1943). Its successor is Red Dutton.
The Trophy Calder, given to best the recruit of the regular season, was named in its honor.
Biography
Frank Calder is immigrant of England which had come to be established with an aim of teaching in a private school of Montreal. After a few years only, he will initially become journalist with the sports for the Montreal Witness (the witness of Montreal) and then for the Montreal Herald . Calder, large impassioned sport, will become one of the founders of the school of the Rugby of Montreal and will be secretary of the Football league of the district of Montreal. Georges Kennedy then owner of the Canadians will be impressed by Calder and will help it to have the post of secretary of the National association of Hockey (ANH).When the ANH was dissolved and that the National league of hockey was founded in 1917, Calder was selected to become the first president about it. Calder knew to make it possible the LNH to survive the various tests of time including inter alia the two world wars and the economic crisis of the Thirties. During the Second world war, Calder is called with the military resources of the army and transmits its capacities temporarily to Meryl “Red” Dutton. But the next day, Calder dies. The trophy which it itself had founded is then renamed the Calder memorial .
It was buried with the Mount-Royal Cimetière, with Montreal, Quebec.
