The rear-admiral Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama , more known under the name of Frank Bainimarama, (born the April 27th 1954), is the commander of the military forces of the islands Fiji. Member of the Order of Midsummer's Day, it directed the government which took over temporarily the duties of the May 29th the July 13rd 2000 after the fallen through Coup d'etat of George Speight.

Bainimarama comes from the village of Kiuva in the peninsula of Kaba, in the province of Tailevu. It has two brothers, Ratu Meli Bainimarama and Ratu Timoci Bainimarama, and married Maria Makitalena, of which it has six children. He acknowledges a passion for the sport and in particular for the Rugby and the Athlétisme. He sat even a time in Fiji Rugby Union. He says Christian confession.

The December 5th 2006, it makes a success of a coup d'etat and seized the capacity. The January 4th 2007, it gave the capacity to the president elected Ratu Josefa Iloilovatu, which had given his blessing to the putschists in their promising the amnesty. This last appointed Bainimarama Prime Minister the following day in spite of the rains of protests.

The coup d'etat of December 5th, 2006

At the first hours of December 5th, 2006, Bainimarama announced to have taken the control of the Fijian archipelago. The coup d'etat had been done without bloodshed. In the tread, Bainimarama dismissed the Prime Minister places from there, Laisenia Qarase, which had requested an Australian intervention beforehand to put an end to the coup d'etat. However, the Prime Minister Australia N John Howard refused to imply his country in this crisis. For its part, Bainimarama affirmed to return the capacity the following week and wanted to make pressure on president Josefa Iloilovatu to name a temporary government and to organize new elections. Bainimarama indicated Jona Baravilalala Senilagakali, a reprocessed army medical officer, as temporary a Prime Minister. He refused to found a Couvre-feu and invited the Fijians to take again a normal life.

Regional tensions

The January 21st 2007, following the prohibitions of stay imposed by the New Zealand on several sympathizers of Bainimarama, and in particular on Parmesh Chand, a Fijian executive person in charge, Bainimarama threatens New Zealand in a veiled way, indicating that " Fiji does not draw aside the possibility of a response if New Zealand continues to scorn and frustrate the administration by intérim". Bainimarama in particular threatens to return in their country the many New Zealand workers who live in the Fiji.
