Frank Abney Hastings

Frank Abney Hastings was a British sailor and a philhellene. (1794 - June 1st 1828)

Grandson of the 10th Count de Huntingdon, it engaged in Royal Navy in 1805. He took part in the Bataille of Trafalgar on the Neptune .

Following a dissension with one of its officers, it left the British marine in 1820. It spent one year in France to learn French. It started from Marseilles for the Greece on March 12th, 1822. It arrived at Hydra the April 3rd.

It took part in various naval actions at the time of the Guerre of Greek independence.

In 1825, it obtained Philhellène Committee of London the armament of a small warship to vapor, the Karteria (“perseverance” in modern Greek). Its crew was composed of British, Swede and Greeks.

He took part in the reconquest of Missolonghi. He made unload troops on the strengthened small islands which protected bay. He was mortally wounded at the time of the unloading on Anatolikon on May 23rd, 1828. He died with Zante on June 1st.
