Franciscus Cornelis Donders (May 27th 1818 - March 24th 1889), was a Professor Dutch of Médecine and Physiologie. He carried out many research in Ophtalmologie, a field where he acquired a solid reputation.
Donders was born with Tilburg in 1818. He studied with Utrecht, but passed his examinations to Leyde. With Flessingue and $the Hague he worked a few years as army medical officer. In 1847, it is named in Utrecht as an extraordinary professor, in 1852 as an ordinary professor. The Ooglijdersgasthuis of Utrecht (in Dutch, literally: Hospital of the ophthalmologic patients), an ophthalmologic hospital, was created in 1858. During many years, the address of this hospital was " F.C. Dondersstraat" , i.e. a street carrying the noml of F.C. Donders. Donders was initially a Physiologiste. Because of sapecialisation in ophthalmology, it became most important Dutch medicine of its time. Donders died in 1889.
The Ooglijdersgasthuis currently forms part of the university medical center ( Universitair Medisch Centrum (UMC)) university of Utrecht. Since 1920, a statue commemorates Donders with the Cemetery Midsummer's Day ( Janskerkhof ).
