Francisco da Costa Gums

The Général Francisco da Gomes Costa (born with Chaves the June 30th 1914, deceased with Lisbon the July 31st 2001) was a soldier and a politician Portuguese. It was the sixteenth President of the Portuguese Republic.

During the period of dictatorship which the Portugal knew, it was implied in the coup attempt of State carried out in 1961 by the Minister for National defense, the General Botelho Moniz. In 1970 he became the commander of the military region of the Angola, which was always a Portuguese colony. It tried to negotiate a military agreement with Angolan separatists less hostile than the Popular liberation movement of Angola or the National front of release of Angola. The September 12th 1972 it was recalled to the Portugal to occupy the post of head of the Armed forces. It will be replaced in March 1974, to have refused to swear fidelity with the Prime Minister Marcelo Caetano in a public ceremony.

After the Revolution of the eyelets in April 1974, it became one of the seven military leaders of the Junte of national hello. It was the second in the hierarchy of the state Portuguese, behind the president António Spínola. It was named president of the Republic the September 30th 1974 after the resignation of this last. He took up his duty until the June 27th 1976, date on which António Ramalho Eanes succeeded to him after being elected democratically.
