Biography

Francisco Suarez was born in Grenade. His/her father was a famous lawyer. He sent his son to the Université of Salamanque, one the most re-elected of of Spain at that time, to follow the courses of the Faculty of Law. But Francisco Suarez was attracted by preachings of Juan Ramirez. It entered the noviciate of the Jésuite S. It taught the Philosophie, then the Théologie.

Entered at sixteen years the Society of Jesus with Salamanque, it studied there the Philosophie and the Théologie of 1565 with 1570. It seems to have been a pupil rather not very promising at the beginning, and failed to give up its studies twice after having failed the examination of entry. Having succeeded with its third attempt, it is distinguished thereafter in philosophy as in theology, before being ordered priest in 1572, then to leave to teach the first of these disciplines with Ávila and Segovia (1575), Valladolid (1576), Rome (1580 - 1585), Alcalá (1585 - 1592), Salamanque (1592 - 1597) and finally Coimbra (1597 - 1616).

He wrote abundantly, on a great number of subjects; its complete works in Latin hold in twenty-six volumes: legal treaties, on the relations between the Church and the State, the Metaphysical and the Theology.

During its life, he is regarded as the largest philosopher and theologist of the time, and receives the nickname of Doctor Eximius (extraordinary, exceptional); the Pape Gregoire XIII attended its first course in Rome. The pope Pie V invited it to refute the errors of Jacques Ier of England, and wished to attach it to his person to benefit from his knowledge. As for Philippe II of Spain, it sent it to Coimbra to give again prestige with the university of the city.

After its death, its writings continued to exert a considerable influence, in particular on some of the principal philosophers of the 17th century, inter alia Grotius, Descartes and Leibniz.

In particular, the Méditations on philosophy first of Descartes (1641) borrow some elements from work of Métaphysique of Francisco Suarez.

The talents of Francisco Suarez were recognized in Rome by the pope Gregoire XIII. He taught the moral Théologie successfully in several towns of Spain. The pope Benoît XIV thought that Francisco Suarez was one two lights of Spain, with Vélasquez.
