Francisco Pereira Coutinho

Francisco Pereira Coutinho (born in?? - died in 1547) was noble Portuguese who received the Capitainerie of Bay of All the Saints ( Baía de Todos bone Santos in Portuguese) of the king Jean III. It arrived there in 1536 when it met Diogo Álvares, the Caramuru, which lived in the area for a certain time.

Biography

Francisco Pereira Coutinho founded the camp (Arraial) of Pereira, in the surroundings of which is today, the Rise (Ladeira) of Barra, with El Salvador. This camp, twelve years later, at the time of the foundation of the city, was called Vila Velha.

The Indians did not like Coutino because of its cruelty and its arrogance. Thus, there be, during its stay, several indigenous revolts. In one of them, it was obliged to take refuge with Oporto Seguro with Diogo Álvares.

At the return, arrived in Bay of All the Saints, in a strong storm, the boat, at the drift, arrived at the beach of Itaparica. There, the Indians did it captive but released Caramuru. Francisco Pereira Coutinho was cut of pieces and was been useful like dish in a anthropophagic festival.

After his death, his/her son tried to occupy the place of his father. The Crown was opposed to it. A conflict is followed from there which was solved by the concession of a hereditary type of pension.
