Francisco Escudero

Francisco Escudero (Zarauz, 1912 - Saint-Sebastien, 2002), was a Spanish type-setter originating in the Basque Country.

Biography

It is born with Zarauz the August 13rd 1912. It begins its musical studies with the municipal Academy of music of Saint-Sebastien and continues them with Madrid, where it was raises of composition of Conrado del Campo.

Prize winner of the provincial government of Guipúzcoa and the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando, it settles in Paris to follow there the courses of improve Paul Dukas and Paul Flem. It leaves then to Munich where he becomes pupil of Albert Wolf.

In 1937, it obtains the National Price of the Art schools of Spain for its Trío bucólico . During the Spanish Civil war, it settles in France, and returns to Spain only at the end of the war.

In 1945, it settles with Bilbao, where it is named director of the Choral society Bilbaína and organizes the orchestra. In 1947, it obtains the First Price of the coucours Homenaje has Falla ( Hommage to Falla ) for its work Pinceladas vascas , concerto for piano and orchestra. In 1948, returns in Zarauz, where it had passed its childhood. It obtains the pulpit of harmony and composition of the Academy of music of Saint-Sebastien, taking the continuation of its former professor, Beltrán Pagola. In 1957, it obtains the National Price of Music, at one moment of its activity of type-setter where it particularly devotes to the kind of the Symphonic poem. It composes in particular Arantzazu and Evocación in Itziar . In 1960, it creates the orchestra of the town of Saint-Sebastien. It composes the opera Zigor on a Basque subject, of which it locates the action in Navarre. He will be played Bilbao, Madrid and Saint-Sebastien. This opera obtains a great success and again receives the National Price of Music Spanish.

Among other remarkable works, one finds the Concerto for Violoncello and Orchestra , a “crowned” symphony, Tonemas (for piano alone, composed at the request of the Spanish Ministry of the Culture for the centenary of the birth of Joaquín Turina), “geosymphonic Imagination and operated it entitled Gernika (ordering of the Company of the Chorus of Bilbao and created in 1987 at the time of the commemoration of the fiftieth anniversary of the bombardment of Guernica.

These last years, several formations interpreted its works, among which the Symphony orchestra of Bilbao and the Symphony orchestra of Galicia. The Donostiarra quintet is particularly interested in its works.

Currently, the family of the type-setter endeavors to publish works which had not been published the alive one of the author.

According to criticism, the work of Escudero has all the elements to belong to most important 20th century. During years, the Spanish cultural situation was not favourable with the diffusion of new works. In addition, the weakness of the culture of the classical music in the last part of the century prevented the recognition of a music which, in other countries, would enjoy encouragements and a unanimous acceptance.

In its work of teacher, it directed the higher Academy of music of Saint-Sebastien. It is during this period that was granted to this academy the possibility of allotting the higher Diploma of musical studies. Its disciples count, inter alia, Jose Luis Marco, Ramon Lazkano, Ángel Illarramendi, Alberto Iglesias and most of the teaching staff of the Academy of Saint-Sebastien as well as other centers of Spanish musical teaching.

It is deceased in June 2002. In 2004, the Academy of music of Saint-Sebastien became the Academy Francisco Escudero.
