Francisco Alvarez (v. 1465 - 1541?) was a missionary and a Explorateur Portuguese.
Chaplain of Emmanuel, king of Portugal, it became embassy secretary that this prince sent in 1515 to David II, king d' Éthiopie. It is only in 1520 that it reaches the Abyssinie, where there remained six years, turning over to Lisbon in 1526 - 1527. To its return, it was sent in 1533 to Rome in embassy near the Pape Clément VII.
The exact date of its death, like that of its birth, is unknown, but it must be after 1540, date on which it published, under the patronage of the king, a relation of his voyage éthopien under the title of Vraie information of the States of the prince Jean (Lisbon, 1540), translated into French in 1558: it is the first work which gave exact details on this region.
