Francisco Adolfo de Varnhagen , Viscount of Oporto Seguro, was a historian and a diplomat paulist (of the State of São Paulo, Brésil), born the February 17th 1816 in São João de Ipanema, municipality of Sorocaba. It is deceased in 1878.

His/her father was a Engineer German Militaire come to study the possibility of mine S from Fer in the area of São Paulo, at the request of the government of Lisbon. He studied with the Portugal, with the Royal Military College of Luz, in Lisbon, and he began a military career in the troops of Dom Pedro I which fought against Dom Miguel.

He completed its first historical work, Notícia C Brasil , between 1835 and 1838. In this same year he discovered the tomb of Pedro Álvares Cabral in the Convent of Graça, EM Santarém, Portugal. He becomes corresponding Academy of Science of Lisbon, is formed as military engineer in 1839, to Real Academia de Fortificação, and goes back to Brazil the following year.

He works some time at the historical and geographical Institute Brazilian, in 1841. In 1844, it obtains the Brazilian nationality which it did not have yet - in spite of it was born in the country and fought for him, because of German ascent of his father. This formality enables him to integrate the diplomatic career.

After having been used for Lisbon and Madrid, it becomes representing Brazil with the Paraguay, in 1858. It is already a historian recognized through the realization of the História Geral C Brasil (1854 - 1857), its most important work. As diplomat, he still officiates in Portugal, in Spain, in Paraguay, in Venezuela, in New Grenade (current Colombia), in Ecuador, in Chile, in Peru and the Netherlands. He benefits from his voyages to collect documents on Brazil in the libraries and the files.

Among its historical work is detached especially the História das Lutas countered bone Holandeses No Brasil desde 1624 E 1654 (History of the fights against the Dutchmen, of 1624 to 1654), 1871, and the História da Independência C Brasil (History of the Independence of Brazil), published in 1916. It buckles its career like representative of its country with Vienna, Austria, where it died the June 29th 1878. Married to Chilean, it was buried with Santiago, the Chile.
