Francis Wurtz (born the January 3rd 1948 with Strasbourg) is a politician of the French Communist party. It is European Député since 1979 and chair parliamentary group European Unified left, Scandinavian green left since 1999.
Francis Wurtz is graduate in literature in 1968. It becomes teaching in 1969, until 1973 when he becomes secretary of the federation of the the Low-Rhine of the PCF and permanent of the party. It remains at this station during three years, before being engaged for a station with the national secretariat, as a political collaborator of Georges Marchais.
In 1979, at the time of the first European election, it is elected appointed European. The same year, it enters to the Central committee of PCF. When it leaves the secretariat of Georges Marchais in 1982, it is named secretary of the Defense committee of freedoms and the human rights in France and in the world , body chaired by Georges Marchais.
In 1990, it enters to the Political office of PCF, before being charged, in 1992, of the international department of PCF. It will remain it until 1999, when it is elected president of the group of the European Unified left, Scandinavian green left. It was chief candidate of PCF for the European elections of 1994, of 1999 and chief candidate in Île-de-France with the elections of 2004.
Current president of GUE-NGL, Francis Wurtz was the subject of an important mediatization at the time of the countryside against the Traité establishing a constitution for Europe. He in particular illustrated himself by publishing since 2003 a supplement of Humanity entitled “ the hidden side of the project Giscard ”, at the time of the European Council of Thessalonique. He also strongly engaged against the Directive Services known as Bolkestein , at the Parliament and by the publication of many platforms.
He was one of the actors at the origin of the creation of the Parti the European left and one of his lawyers within PCF, in particular at the time of the internal vote on the adhesion of PCF with the PGE. The many platforms which it publishes in Humanity on these occasions gave him a leading role within PCF. It holds a chronicle in the weekly magazine Humanity Sunday.
He is the only French European deputy to be elected in 1979 and to be re-elected since (Paul Vergès, another communist deputy, was also elected in 1979 but did not sit between 1984 and 2004). He is also member of the board of directors of the Institut of international relations and strategic (IRIS).
