Francis Rocard , born on May 23rd, 1957 with Paris, is a Astrophysicien French, person in charge since, 1989, of the exploration program of the solar system at the National center of space studies (CNES).

Relationship

Francis Rocard is the grandson of the physicist Yves Rocard (1903-1992), the son of the politician Michel Rocard (1930-) and the cousin resulting from Germain of the actress Pascale Rocard (1960-).

Career

  • 1986 : science doctor in astrophysics of the university Paris-South.

  • 1986 : it begins its career like astrophysicist with CNRS while taking part in mission VEGA from overflight of the Halley's Comet and in the mission Phobos, of mineralogical study of the surface of Mars.
  • 1989 : it enters to CNES like person in charge of the exploration programs of the solar system. For this reason, it takes part in the missions of studies of March 96, exploration program of the red planet with the Russia.
  • Since 1998, it coordinates the implementation of the exploration program of Mars through the missions Mars Express, NetLander and of the Sonde Cassini-Huygens in co-operation with the European space agency and NASA.
  • It also supervises Rosetta, mission of study of a comet with ESA. Rosetta sails towards the Comet Churyumov-Gerasimenko which it will reach in August 2014. A 10 years odyssey for this probe which weighs 3 tons and a billion euros, and which must be posed on the core of ice of comet.
