Francis Mer , born the May 25th 1939 with Pau, is an industrialist and Politician French.

Biography

Francis Mer is former student of the Polytechnic school and old mining engineer.

Professional path

Francis Mer entered the group Saint-Gobain Pont-à-Mousson in October 1970.

It was responsible for the Plan for Saint-Gobain Industries (1971), Directeur of the Plan to the Company of Saint-Gobain Pont-à-Mousson (1973) and Managing director of Saint-Gobain Industries (1974-1978), before being named, in September 1978, Executive vice president of the Saint-Gobain group, responsible for the industrial policy.

In July 1982, it becomes Chairman and managing director of Pont-à-Mousson SA and Director of the Branch Drains and Mechanics of the Saint-Gobain group. In September 1986, the State, shareholder, decides to amalgamate Usinor and Sacilor and entrusts to Francis Mer the presidency of the new iron and steel group.

In July 1995, Usinor Sacilor is privatisé and Francis Mer is named President by new the Board of directors on October 10th, 1995. In addition, since June 1988, Francis Mer is President of the French federation of Steel.

It also chaired Eurofer (association of the European steel producers) of 1990 to 1997.

It chairs the National association of Technical Research since 1991. From October 1997 in October 1998, it chaired International Iron and Steel Institute.

Former president of the Foundation for the political innovation, he is member of his Board of trustees today.

Since January 2007, he is president of the board of trustees of the group Safran.

Policy

  • 2002, Francis Mer is member of the First government of Jean-Pierre Raffarin and of the Second government of Jean-Pierre Raffarin as a Minister for the Economy, Finances and Industry (from 5/7/2002 to 3/30/2004).
