Francis E. Low (born in 1921 with New York — died on February 16th 2007 with Haverford in Pennsylvania) was a physicist theorist. He was professor with the Massachusetts Institute off Technology (MIT), where he was director of 1980 to 1985.
After the war, it continued its studies with the Université Columbia. It accepted there its doctorate in Physique in 1950. Low worked then with the Institute for Advanced Study of Princeton then taught with the Université of Illinois.
He married, in 1948, Natalie Sadigur.
He was director of the department of theoretical physics and the laboratory of nuclear sciences of MIT.
Low was one of the founding members of the Union off Concerned Scientists in 1969 — who defends the regulation of the use of the nuclear power — that it briefly chaired. It was relieved after a dissension with other members who refused to study the possibility of effective nuclear reactors and without dangers.
In 1980, Low was named director ( provost ) MIT. During its 5 years mandate, it incorporated the Whitehead institute in MIT. It also reinforced the role of humanities (literature and languages) with MIT.
Low resigned of MIT in 1991, but continued to teach during still a few years. It wrote a book, Classical Field Theory: Electromagnetism and Gravitation which was published in 1997 by John Wiley & Sons.
He survive a son, two girls and six grandchildren.
