Francis James is a Poète French born with Tournay (Hautes-Pyrénées) the December 2nd 1868 and died with Hasparren (today Yrénées-Atlantiques) on November 1st 1938. It passed the major part of its existence in (Béarn and Basque Country), sources of inspiration of its literature.

It makes its studies with the college of Pau, then in Bordeaux. In 1886, he discovers Baudelaire; confronted with the failure after having failed the vat, and in full search with itself, he writes in all 89 poems. In 1889 it becomes acknowledged in a notary with Orthez. It finds however time to send to the press arts persons its poetic tests, noticed by Mallarmé and Gide. In 1895 it is directed definitively towards the life poetry. From now on celebrates, it creates Jammisme. From 1898 to 1900, he writes angelus of the paddle to the angelus of the evening, then the Mourning of the Primulas and binds in 1901 with Claudel. At 35 years, he saw a sad history of love which gives rise to the admirable collection: Clearing in the Sky. In 1907, at 39 years, he marries Genevieve Goedorp, an enthusiastic admiror, who gives him six children. In 1912 appear Géorgiques Christian women. In 1928, it meets Paul Valéry. He dies in Hasparren at All Saints' day 1938.

Life and work

Its first poetic compositions are known Parisian literary circles about 1895. This poetry full with freshness starts a poetic revival, putting fine at a certain preciosity Symbolist. It binds in particular with André Gide, with which it remains in Algérie in 1896, Mallarmé, Henri de Régnier. Later it will bind with Paul Claudel.

Its more famous collection, Of the angelus of the paddle to the angelus of the evening , appears in 1897 with the Mercure de France. the Mourning of the Primulas (1901) is another interesting collection. Clerk of notary at his beginnings it can from now on live literature.

1905 see its conversion with Catholicism. It turns then to more rigor, and its poetry becomes more nun and dogmatic.

In comparison with the Parisian coteries, Francis James always remained provincial a little solitary, alive withdrawn in its Pyrenean mountains. It posed several times its candidature for the French Academy which never accepted it in its center. If its worms took, with time, a small out of date air, James, who was never with the mode in his time is not by no means an obsolete poet and its worms are always pleasant to read.

It is known today like the author of the Prayer , put in music by Georges Brassens. It is about an extract of a poem of the collection the church equipped with sheets (1906). The original title is the painful mysteries . Brassens removed certain passages of them in order to make the text percussion.

The poem I love the ass is also famous:

I love the ass so soft

walking along the houx.
It takes guard with the bees
and moves its ears;
and it carries the poor
and of the bags filled with barley.
It goes, close to the ditches,
of a small broken step.
My friend believes it stupid
because he is poet.
It always reflects.
Its eyes are out of velvet.
Young girl in the soft heart,
you do not have his softness

One notices in this extract the preferred topics of the poet (young girls, asses, humility…) and of the characteristics of its Prosody: Assonance S ( poor / barley ), freedom with the traditional rules of the Versification ( My ami' e' believes it stupid ).
