Francis Hauksbee old the (1666 - 1713), also called Francis Hawksbee , was a British scientist 17th century, member of the Royal Society. It is especially known for its work on the electricity and the electrostatic repulsion.
About 1705, Hauksbee discovers that if it places an minor amount of mercury in glass of a Générateur electrostatics of Otto von Guericke modified by its care, and that it evacuates the air of this one, when the ball is charged by friction with the hand, a gleam becomes visible while placing its hand close to the ball, outside. This gleam was sufficient to make it possible to read. That seemed to be similar to the Feu of Saint-Elme.
This effect is the base of the Lampe neon and the Mercury discharge lamp.
In 1709, it publishes physicomechanical Expériences on various objects ( Physico-Mechanical Experiments one Various Subjects ), work in which is summarized the major part of its scientific work.
