Francis Chateauraynaud is a Sociologue French. Born in February 1960 with Périgueux, he is a former student of the college Bertrand de Born.

Biography

Director of studies in sociology to the school of the high studies in social sciences of Paris, where it directs the Group of pragmatic and reflexive sociology (GSPR), Francis Chateauraynaud animates seminars of research like “the eye of the international community” (seminar of the GSPR), " Sociology of the controversies and the debates publics" (in Paris and Marseilles with Jean-Michel Fourniau) or “Concepts and Methods for the analysis of the complex files” (with Didier Torny).

This researcher is located in the current of the pragmatic sociology. Its work associates a understanding Approche, which consists in following to more close the actors, and a configurational approach, making it possible to apprehend the social processes in a more total way. Breaking with the fasteners ethnomethodologic interactionnists and of the majority of the pragmatic currents, this orientation connects the analysis of the action and the judgment in situation to processes of transformation of long life. For that purpose, Chateauraynaud attaches an particular importance to the clothes industry of models and instruments for the analysis of the Controverse S, of the businesses and the crises which cross the contemporary companies. In fact, data-processing work occupies an important place in this step. The multiple works and articles show that it is not a question of a simple search of originality or singularity, but well of a true course of investigation, with the direction which gave in this term John Dewey, one of the founding fathers of the Pragmatisme.

In 1999, Chateauraynaud and Didier Torny publish the Dark precursors: A pragmatic Sociology of alarm and risk, work for which they create the concept of Lanceur of alarm thought in relation to the general configuration of treatment of the risks which emerged in the years 1990 in Europe - the work speaks about a new configuration called " Policy of the vigilance". To anchor their concepts, the authors analyze the processes of alarm starting from three examples of technological risks: the Asbestos, the Nuclear (radioactive risk) and the “Mad cow”. This analysis is based on the data processing of important corpora of texts using software Prospero.

Chateauraynaud is joint author, with Jean-Pierre Charriau, of scientific software to the service of the sociology of alarms and the controversies, in particular “Prospero” and “Marlowe”. In 2000, Chateauraynaud and the data processing specialist Jean-Pierre Charriau (ex-bass player of Marie and the boys, French rock group) launch a new research program known as of “socio-data processing”, which gives rise to the Marlowe software, presented like a “sociologist electronic”, able to carry out surveys into the corpora gathered by the researchers and to dialog with them. This software defrayed the chronicle in July 2003 by signing the electronic petition diffused on Internet for the release of Jose Bove (see the Duck connected of July 30th, 2003).

One finds in the review Matériaux for the history of our time (number 82 of 2006), the trace of a controversy between Francis Chateauraynaud and Carlo Ginzburg in connection with the attitude to be adopted vis-a-vis the tools of the Internet, and in particular Google. (see bibliography will infra).
