Francesco De Sanctis

Francesco De Sanctis (born the March 28th 1817 with Morra Irpino, Campania - died the December 29th 1883 with Naples) was an Italian academic, generally considered as the most important specialist in Italian Littérature at the 19th century.

Biography

After having carried out its secondary studies in Naples, Francesco De Sanctis is formed near Basilio Puoti. He teaches then in a private course. Implied in the Neapolitan revolutionary government established in 1848, he is imprisoned during three years in Naples. Having acquired a European reputation by its criticism of the work of Dante, it is named professor with Zurich.

In 1860, it is named Minister for the State education in Naples, posts that it will again occupy in 1878 - 1879. Elected official appointed in 1861, it sits at the Room. De Sanctis becomes in 1871 professor of comparative literature with the Université of Naples. Its Histoire of the Italian literature ( Storia beyond will letteratura italiana ) is the first of the kind.

Among the pupils on whom he exerted a notable influence, one can quote the philosopher Benedetto Croce.
