Francesco Brioschi (born the December 22nd 1824 with Milan - died the 13 or December 14th 1897 with Milan) was a Milanese mathematics professor who played a leading role in the formation of the Italian State.
During the period of unification of Italy, it was devoted to the installation of a new education system, initially by the development of the law Casati , then as a first secretary of Sanctis, Ministre for the State education.
He was the principal founder of the Politecnico of Milan, and directed the publication of two new scientific magazines: the Annali di matematica will pura E applicata and It Politecnico , for which it made sure collaboration of researchers such as Enrico Betti and Luigi Cremona. It was implied largely in the work of the Milanese scientific institutions, and encouraged the career of young brilliant scientists who had not been able to obtain diplomas because of the political events or of their social status, like Eugenio Beltrami.
He became senator of the kingdom of Italy in 1865. He organized the International exhibition of Milan of 1881. He intervened with many recoveries at the Parliament to simplify the statutes of the companies and to make it possible the young Italian industry to take his rise, and militated for the suppression of the grantings and the customs tariffs, supporting in particular the young printers like Giovan Battista Pirelli.
Its influence at the Parliament increased so much so that it directed governmental commissions more and more, without to slacken its scientific and university activity (it was elected president of the Accademia dei Lincei in 1884, where it occupied the armchair n°5). ----
