Francesco Barozzi (Latinized in Franciscus Barocius ; born the August 9th 1537 in Candie, auj. Heraklion, in Crete, † the November 23rd 1604 in Venice) is a mathematician and an Italian astronomer of the Rebirth.

Biography

Francesco Barozzi, wire of noble Venetian named Jacopo Barozzi, studied mathematics with the Université of Padoue, and passed the remainder of its existence to Venice. The grounds which he inherited his father in Crete, ensured to him an annual rent of 4.000 Ducat S, so that he could devote himself to his research tasks its to need to aspire to academic positions. It gave however conferences in 1559 to the Université of Padoue on the Of will sphæra of Sacrobosco.

The humanistic one

Barozzi translated several works of Old, of which the Commentaire on the Éléments of Euclide of Proclus (appeared in Venice in 1560), and mathematical works of Héron of Alexandria, Pappus of Alexandria, and Archimedes. He played a considerable part in the redécouverte of the Éléments of Euclide, and was in correspondence with several mathematicians, of which the marquis Guidobaldo del Monte and the German Jésuite Christopher Clavius.

As a hellenist, it collected several petrographic inscriptions through Crete. Its collection of concise inscriptions, covering of the very varied subjects, was supplemented and published after its death by its nephew and heir Iacopo Barozzi (1562-1617). The Université of Oxford acquired in of it 1629. It is preserved today at the Bodleian Library.

Lawsuit in sorcery

Towards 1583, Barozzi was heard first once by the Inquisition for an unknown reason and was found guilty. In 1587, it was shown of Apostasie, Hérésie, and practical occult having caused a storm in Crete. Recognized again guilty, it had to pour 100 ducats and was condemned to the suspended sentence.

  • Admirandum illud geometricum problema tredecim modis demonstratum quod docet duas lineas in eodem plano designare, quae nunquam invicem coinciding, etiam so in infinitum protrahantur: and quanto longius producuntur, tanto sibiinuicem propiores euadant (1586). This treaty of geometry presents thirteen ways of carrying out a straight line parallel on a given line. * Opusculum: in quo una Oratio and due Question, deteriorated of Certitudine and deteriorated of Medietate Mathematicarum continentur . In this book, Barozzi proclaims that " the certainty of mathematics is due to the syntactic rigor of the démonstrations."
  • Rythmomachia (1572), dedicated to Camille Paleotti, a senator of Bologna, presents a mathematical play, the Rithmomachie , also called " play of the philosophe"

Translations

  • Pronostico Universale di tutto it mondo (Bologna, 1566), is the translation of a collection of Almanach (of prophecies) of Nostradamus for the years 1565 - 1570.
  • Oracula Leonis (1577), is the translation of a collection of prophecies to key allotted to the Byzantine emperor Leon VI Wise the. The translation is dedicated to the governor crétois Giacomo Foscarini.

Anecdotes

The lunar crater Barocius was named in its honor.
