France 4 is a national Television channel French of public service dedicated to the entertainment.

History of the chain

Festival

June 24th 1996, France Television tries the adventure of the specialized channels to feed the new range of satellite channels TPS whose group is shareholder with 25% and created Festival , public specialized channel diffused on the satellite then taken again on the cable networks, which proposes films of prestige of cinema and television, mythical works having made the quality of television in the noble format of the feature film, the sagas and the television serials.

Festival is an excellent solution for France Television and ARTE France because it makes it possible the two groups, which enormously invested in the French fiction of quality for France 2, France 3 and ARTE, to offer one second life to their productions without suffering from competition and to satisfy real waiting with the televiewers with the moment. The kind not being however extensible ad infinitum, the programs fall quickly into the repeat broadcast.

Difficult birth of France 4

In 2001, whereas TNT is only with the state of project in France, the Socialist government of Lionel Jospin request with the president of France public Televisions to think of a project of range of channels diffused on TNT, so that the Public service holds a choice place in this project. The capacity sees in TNT the technical revolution which it waited for a long time to develop and sit the supremacy of the television of public service put at evil following the privatization of TF1 in 1987. France Televisions then proposes the creation of three new chains: France 1 , France 4 and France 6 , is a chain of continuous information, a chain devoted to the areas and a chain of repeat broadcast of the programs of France 2 and France 3 with shifted schedules. Meanwhile, the capacity changed edge and the government of Jean-Pierre Raffarin re-examines the proposals with the fall in a context of strict budgetary policy. October 23rd 2002, the SCUMS retains Festival to be reproduced on the public multiplexing of TNT. After having failed to be called France 8 or France Precedes , the chain is finally renamed France 4 , falling under the series of the variations of France Televisions, by slipping into a place still nonoccupied between France 3 and France 5. She proposes a new rather similar grid of that of France Supervision: the large spectacle, the sport, fiction, the cinema and series. To divert, create the event, to make discover, impassion, such are the main objectives of this new chain.

Mission

France 4 was designed like complementary to the other chains of France Televisions. By its contents of programming, it aims to the renovation of the audience of public televisions. It has the role of contributing to reinforce the cultural, artistic offer and of live performances of the public group, and to expose French and European audio-visual creation.

Capital

The capital of the chain is held to 89% by France Televisions and to 11% by ARTE France.

Sit

The seat of Festival, become France 4 on March 31st, 2005, is located at the 7, esplanade Henri de France in the XV {{E}} district of Paris, seat of France Televisions. You can reach it with the RER C (Bld Victor) and the T3 (Bridge of Garigliano).
