Synopsis
During the
First World War, Camille, an young woman whose husband fights with the face, receives this one a short letter of rupture. Shaken, it decides to go to join it, but, driven back by the payment of the time which prohibits to the women to only move, it does not have an other alternative only to be disguised as a man to be able to take the road with foot.
Comment
The work of
Serge Bozon is allegorical and raises some questions with the spectator: aren't we in the search of an ideal, captive of the quadrature of the circle? And this circle in which we turn in round, conditioned socially and sexually by laws (or commands), wouldn't it have, like limits, those of the borders of a country, for example France, similar to those of our spirits? One thinks immediately of the work of the situationnist Guy Debord
In girum imus nocte and consumimur igni (We turn in round in the night and we are devoured by fire) . Camille becomes one of valiant the small soldiers androgynes of the group (or the swarm), able to eliminate those which could represent a threat for its survival. As soon as one tries to bore the carapace of one of his members (the assault with intent to commit rape of Camille), the attacker is immediately eliminated by the group. The group goes blindness towards its ideal (out of the limits of the circle) completely foreign to the laws since, in fact, it has name “desertion”. Its song (buzz of the swarm) is contrary to the warlike anthems: it is the lament of one woman to the research of the love or the perpetuation of the species. “France” remains a pure spirit, the group moves only through fields and forests and the only identity reference marks are the round helmets of the
French, those embossed of the German
, a trench of Poilu S and a watchtower. Paradoxically, this film all in outside is likely to appear hermetic with those which would await (in vain) any speech militant for the identity of a country like France: its goal is more to deliver body and spirits of their chains…

- Serge Bozon and songs of film:
I had the impression that the songs would indeed make it possible to multiply by ten a certain type of emotions and to realize the unit of the group in a more emotive way. In a song, the concept of group exists immediately in a unit way, they do not need to tell their life, to think that they are welded for a long time, etc, since they sing together: the music induces a fraternity in fact, “in action”. I had also the impression that the romantic track initial and hidden then, since Camille can speak with nobody about her husband, his search, re-appeared by the songs in an unexpected way, since they are love songs and only female point of view. I.e. in fact love songs from the point of view of a woman, each time, tell a meeting in love with a foreign man in a foreign country. And it is never the same soldier who sings. As if the soldiers had all of the hidden musical gifts and that one could not anticipate until where the list of these gifts could go.
