Francavilla di Sicilia is a common of the Province of Messine in the area Sicily in Italy.
Geography
Francavilla di Sicilia is in the center of the Vallée of Alcantara, in north of the
Etna, on left bank of the river Alcantara. In his territory one finds also the river San Paolo and the Zavianni torrent which are two tributary Alcantara.
History
Francavilla was born between the year
1000 and the year
1100. The first known data are related to the person of San Cremete, a hermit who lived during the Arab domination on a platform of rock in the dénominée zone
Placa . Today this platform is known with the name of " In Badiazza".
When the count Roger de Hauteville passed in this zone with his continuation, Cremete required a help of him in order to build a monastery on the rock where he lived his solitary life.
The Roger account agreed and between the years 1090 and 1100 was accomplished the monastery of
San Salvatore di Placa where were established less about Basiliano.
Around they were formed then of the agglomerates of the houses. At the beginning he was inhabited only by groups of peasants who worked for the monks considering Roger had established that all the grounds who could be seen by the monastery was property of the convent.
