Work
Poetic and linguistic contribution
To purify and discipline the French language were the work of its life. It expresses for that a great severity with regard to the Maniérisme and of the Baroque of the poets of the previous century and in particular of Philippe Desportes. One can regard it as the first theorist of the classic art made of measurement and propriety and one of the reformers of the French language. It was for that one of the authors most constantly republished during the Ancien Mode.
The homage which addressed to him Boileau (“Finally Malherbe came…,”) expresses this debt of the traditional writers. Today this Hémistiche passed in the Langue to greet the advent of a progress, of a reform.
Having, even with the King, his outspokenness, he answered one day this last:
Some absolute that you are, you would know, Lord, neither to abolish nor to establish a word, if the use does not authorize it.Malherbe, this pessimist, was hardly made illusion on its state and said but
it was a stupidity to make the trade of rhymester who a poet was not more useful for the State than a good player of skittles.
Tallemant of Réaux, which described it like “lout and uncivil”, has well depicts the character “maniac” of its obsession for the purity of the language. He said his enemies “that, if he put himself at it, he would make their faults of the books larger than their same books”. Some always refused, for this reason, to submit their writings for his approval because “it was only one tyrant, and that it cut down the spirit with people”. Among those which were risked there nevertheless, “He says to a man who showed him a malicious poem where there had as a title: POUR ROI, that there was to only add: POUR SE TORCHER CUL. Even, “one hour before to die, it awoke as in start of a great drowsiness, to take again its hostess, who was used to him as guard, of a word which was not quite French, to her liking; and as its confessor wanted some to make him reprimand, he says to him that he had not been able to prevent himself some, and that he had wanted until death to maintain the purity of the French language. ”
