François d\' Estaing

Happy François of Estaing (1460 - 1529), bishop of Rodez.

Biography

François d' Estaing, born in 1460, with Prades-with Aubrac, was elected bishop of Rodez in 1501 by the chapter of the cathedral. He devoted twenty-five years to the Diocèse of Rodez, where he deployed an intense pastoral activity, imposing itself by its piety and its authority. He reforms manners of the ecclesiastics (in particular monks of the Abbaye of Conches), recruits priests having a theological formation, opens schools: all this activity keeps the Rouergue away of the Reform, however traversed by the Protestant merchants.

It belonged to the large council of the king. Its important incomes enabled him to activate the building site of the cathedral. One owes him in particular the construction of the bell-tower.

It is him which gave to the honor in catholic Christendom the worship of the Guardian angel.
