Holy François Xavier , in Spanish Francisco Javier , in Basque Frantzisko Xabier , the Apostle of the Indies (born the April 7th 1506 in Javier, close to Pampelune in Navarre - died the December 3rd 1552 in the island of Sancian, with broad of Canton, China), was a missionary Spanish Jesuit , recognized like Saint by the Catholique S and the Anglican S. It is celebrated the December 3rd.
Biography
Born in a noble family from Navarre, it made studies of Théologie to the Sorbonne, placing with the Collège Holy-Bores. It met there Pierre Favre and Ignace de Loyola, the founder about the Jésuites. It took part in the foundation of the Society of Jesus in 1534.It entered itself the new order, and made wish, in 1534, to go to work with the conversion of the " infidèles".
Impassioned by the missions, it was ordered priest in 1537. In 1540, at the request of Jean III of Portugal, was sent by Paul III évangéliser the people of the Eastern Indies. It left in boat in April 1541 and unloaded with Goa the May 6th 1542. It made there, in Goa especially, several bright conversions. It went thus until Taiwan.
The tradition (and the bubble of Canonization of 1623) want that it also carried its efforts to the Filipino , but no trace of this voyage was found. In 1545, it left for Malacca. From there, it went to the Moluques, where it provided the foundations of a mission with Ambon, Morotai and Ternate in 1546 and 1547.
In Malacca, François Xavier had met of the Japanese, which also gave him the idea of évangéliser the Japan. He unloads in August 1549 there, with Kagoshima.
He died in 1552 after being falls ill during a voyage in boat of Malacca to the island of Sancian. He was canonized the May 12th 1622, at the same time as Ignace de Loyola, by Gregoire XV. The death of this last prevented the bubble from being promulgated before 1623. The body of François Xavier rests in the church Jesuit of Goa.
Since 1614, its right-hand man is in a reliquary in the church of Gesù, with Rome, church-mother of the Society of Jesus.
He is also patron saint of the Mongolia.
