François Thurot

François Thurot , born with Nuits-Saint-Georges the July 22nd 1727 and died in broad of the island of Man the February 28th 1760, is a Corsaire French.

Wire of postmaster, it makes short studies of surgery, then embarks as surgeon on a corsair. Captive fact by the English, it succeeds in escaping. It becomes pilot, then is illustrated as captain of a Dunkirk tradind ship.

Corsair, it inflicts heavy losses with the maritime trade of the English and the king entrusts to him the command of a flotilla intended to create a diversion at the time of a descent envisaged in England by the marshal of Conflans.

Six ships thus install Dunkirk in October 1759 with on board: 4 pomegranate companies, 5 Stake S of the soldiers of the gardes-fran1caises, 4 stakes of the guard-Swiss , 5 stakes of the regiment of Artois, 4 stakes of the Regiment of Burgundy, 3 stakes of the Regiment of Cambis, 4 stakes of the Regiment of the foreign volunteers.

The supply is difficult, the disagreement is total between the officers. Finally small forwarding unloads in Ireland with Carrickfergus under the orders of the marquis de Bragelongne and takes the garrison.

But this victory is of short duration because an English fleet surprises them close to the islands Copelands. While the Fair (36 guns) and the Terpsichore (24 guns) go quickly, François Thurot who orders the Maréchal of Beautiful Isle opposes beautiful but vain resistance. He dies in the combat at 33 years on February 28th, 1760 and its body rests with the Irish cemetery of Kirkmaiden, Galloway.
