François Schaller
François Schaller (born the December 3rd 1920 with Porrentruy and dead the February 18th 2006 with Lausanne) is a economist Suisse.
Career
Holder of a double Doctorate in economy and social sciences and political, it has travaill during nearly twenty years in industry (clock making in particular).Appointed professor with the University of Bern in 1953 (part-time), then with the University of Lausanne in 1963, François Schaller simultaneously assumes the two lesson until its retirement in 1985. He is recognized like a large French-speaking analyst of the economic problems of his time, in particular inflation. Its talent of popularizer and its taste of the public debate and policy are worth to him to be frequently invited with the radio and the television of French-speaking Switzerland. In 1970, it plays a considerable part in the rejection of the popular initiative for the fixing of quotas of immigration (initiative known as Schwarzenbach ). Parallel to its academic activities, he exercised multiple mandates within federal or cantonal commissions.
Impassioned history of the economic thinking (David Ricardo, Karl Marx and John Maynard Keynes in particular), François Schaller published a thesis entitled “Of the charity deprived with the economic rights and social of the citizen” who still refers today. He is also the author of a “critical Test on the concept of productivity” in 1966 which shows impossibility of measuring in a credible way what work and capital produce. He signs a comment of topicality every two weeks, during fifteen years, with the one of the Journal of Geneva. Thereafter, it holds a monthly heading until in 2005 of criticism of book in the economic daily newspaper the Agefi.
Political commitment and economic
François Schaller remained fundamentally keynésien, even if the fight against inflation converted it with the monetarism at the end of the years 1970. President of the Council of the Swiss national Bank of 1986 with 1989, he is also member of several federal commissions (Commission of the economic situation in particular). Its last great political commitment goes back to 1992, against the accession of Switzerland with instituted European Economic space.In the field of the companies, François Schaller sits inter alia at the council of the group Ciba with Basle, or of Nestec, subsidiary of development of the group Nestlé, with Vevey. He chairs the group lausannois Castolin and the company of machine tools Bechler Moutier. He is at the origin of the regional fusion of the manufacturers of machine tools which gave the current group Tornos.
